Wondering Where to Retire? Residents at CCRCs are Happier, Healthier

Group of happy seniors living in an independent living community.

The decision of where to live during your retirement years is an important one. And did you know that, beyond a roof over your head, your residence could offer an increased opportunity at wellbeing?

As part of The Age Well Study, a project conducted by Mather LifeWays Institute on Aging in partnership with Northwestern University, a research team compared wellness outcomes in residents at continuing care retirement communities, also known as Life Plan communities, versus those in the community-at-large.

Participants were asked about their own wellbeing and completed a survey exploring their outcomes in physical, intellectual, emotional, social, spiritual and vocational wellness. Results from the five-year study focus on each of those dimensions of wellness as a framework for examining health.

Residents in continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs) report higher satisfaction with happiness, social contact, physical activity, engagement in intellectual activities and understanding of their purpose in life than older adults not living in these communities.

Springpoint is proud to have been selected as a participant in this study. In our communities, including Meadow Lakes, we offer opportunities for residents to engage in the healthy lifestyle they want through socialization, activities and amenities at our CCRCs.

Benefits of Independent Living Communities

There are many benefits of independent community living, including:

  • Greater Socialization Opportunities: You’re easily able to share a meal, play a game or attend a function with neighbors as a resident at a CCRC – all you have to do is walk out your door, and you have an entire community of people surrounding you.
  • Greater Wellness Opportunities: Perhaps the greatest asset Meadow Lakes offers in terms of a healthy lifestyle is the LivWell program. LivWell is a holistic wellness program for seniors, aimed to cater to each of the dimensions of wellness. Our philosophy is, “To provide opportunity to engage in experiences which supports a high quality of life, personal choice, lifelong development and an optimal sense of wellbeing.” Examples of programming include sports clubs and tournaments, cultural dance groups and resident scholar lectures. LivWell is all about choice. You decide how involved you want to be and in what activities you wish to participate in – it’s all up to you.
  • A Host of Amenities: Not only do you have access to your spacious apartment or cottage – you also can take advantage of a variety of onsite amenities. Think of it like an extension of your living space. Amenities include two pools, a stained-glass studio, library, fitness center and a dining room, plus our community is even located on an accredited arboretum.
  • More Time for Yourself: At our full-service senior living community, you never again have to worry about a “must-do” list. Our maintenance-free living means you’ll no longer deal with the hassle of housekeeping chores, living expenses or safety and security.
