Arbor Day at Meadow Lakes
“The best friend on Earth of man is the tree. When we use the tree respectfully and economically, we have one of the greatest resources on the earth.” ― Frank Lloyd Wright
Arbor Day is celebrated every year on the last Friday in April. This holiday is focused on the significance of trees and the immense benefits they bring to our lives and the world around us. At Meadow Lakes, Arbor Day is an especially important holiday. Our continuing care retirement community is located on a beautiful accredited arboretum, and we take pride in our community’s unique connection to nature.
What is Arbor Day?
Arbor Day is an annual celebration recognizing the importance of trees in our lives. The holiday first started in 1872 when a tree enthusiast, Julius Sterling Morton, encouraged Nebraska City, Nebraska, to plant trees. Thousands of neighbors came together that day to plant trees, and children even formed a parade in celebration. Within 20 years of the first celebrated Arbor Day, the holiday was recognized in every American state. Many states now designate this day as a time to learn more about trees and plant trees within the community.
Why is Arbor Day Important?
Arbor Day offers us the opportunity to step back and learn more about the powerful effects of trees. Trees offer the necessities of life itself; they clean our air, give homes to wildlife and help to create healthy communities. Nature is also extremely beneficial to a person’s health; some positive effects of nature include physical health benefits, socialization opportunities and a general increase in wellbeing.
Alternative Arbor Day Celebration Ideas
This year, Arbor Day looks a little different. Although we may not be able to get together in groups or attend events to celebrate, there are alternative ways you’re able to still take time out of your day to appreciate nature.
- Read a book or poem about trees.
- Spend some time on the Arbor Day Foundation website to learn more about this holiday.
- Take a walk outside.
- Plant a tree in your yard.
- Paint or draw a picture of a tree.
- Research different types of trees and learn to identify them.
When we’re able to fully enjoy each other’s company again, get a group together to volunteer at a local organization dedicated to tree and plant care. Arbor Day may only be celebrated for one day, but we’re able to carry the sentiment and celebration with us year-round.
