Senior Safety Tips for Staying Safe Behind the Wheel

Learn how to stay safe on the road with our senior safety tips for drivers.

As you age, potential changes to your health and wellness, like your vision may impact your driving. For example, you may notice it getting harder to drive at night, or it may be more difficult to turn your head to check for vehicles in other lanes. Although bothersome, these issues may be helped by learning more about driving as we age and utilizing a few senior safety tips to make it easier. Read the six safety tips below to learn more.

Tips for Driving Safely as You Age

Perform Regular Vehicle Maintenance

Scheduling regular oil changes and maintenance for your vehicle will not only help you stay safe on the road, it will also keep your vehicle on the road longer. Be sure to pay attention to the way your vehicle feels when driving, and if you notice any changes, bring it in right away for a check up.

Regularly check your tires for adequate air pressure levels and tread. If the tread on your tires is wearing down, it may be time to replace the tires to keep you safe during hazardous weather conditions such as rain and snow.

Embrace and Utilize New Technologies

New vehicle technologies are changing rapidly. With backup cameras and on-screen navigation, these updates can make your driving life much easier. If you’re having trouble navigating, consider upgrading to a car that can assist you with that. If it’s hard for you to get in and out of your vehicle, find one that has electric seats that adjust at the click of a button. There are many ways in which technology has changed driving for the better.

Stay Physically Fit

While this may seem like an odd tip, your physical fitness has a lot to do with safe driving. Making sure to remain active and flexible will help you turn the wheel, check your mirrors and look over your shoulder while driving. Walking, paired with yoga or other stretching exercises are a great way to remain fit and flexible – and safe behind the wheel.

Schedule Vision and Hearing Tests Regularly

In tandem with staying physically fit, your vision and hearing are a huge part of safe driving. Make sure to schedule regular visits for check-ups to test for things like vision and hearing loss, which can affect your driving. Thankfully, in most cases these are things that can be improved easily. You may need to invest in glasses for night driving or a hearing aid, but you won’t need to give up driving altogether.

Put Your Cell Phone Down

As tempting as it can be to use your time in the car for catching up with family and friends, cell phones can be a deadly distraction for all ages. When you get in your vehicle, put your cell phone in the glove compartment or in the back seat to stop from picking it up when at a stop light or receiving a phone call. If someone does call, wait to return the call once you’ve parked.

Drive in Good Conditions

If you are having any sort of trouble with driving, be it night driving or navigation, make sure the conditions are right for your drive. Try to schedule drives around times you know will be lighter traffic, or when it’s still daylight. Stick to familiar routes so as not to get mixed up or lost. Making sure the conditions are right can be a good way to stay safe and feel confident behind the wheel.
