Active Aging Week

Seniors taking a hike during Active Aging Week

The International Council on Active Aging (ICAA) is ready to kick off its annual Active Aging Week beginning September 23. Aging has long been associated with an increasingly sedentary lifestyle, but those who participate in Active Aging Week are changing what it means to grow older across the globe. Active Aging Week encourages you to celebrate and embrace an active, social lifestyle no matter your age.

Daily themes during Active Aging Week allow participants to focus on different aspects of aging actively. This year’s themes include: wellness with water, nutrition for strength and energy, and the silent challenge of incontinence. These themes teach us that aging actively goes beyond physical activity, by focusing on nutrition and other components which factor into your overall health and well-being. Each day participants can learn about ways in which to improve their physical, mental and emotional health, to live stronger and healthier lives.

Active Aging at Meadow Lakes

Meadow Lakes encourages its residents to diminish the idea that aging equals inactivity by engaging in our award-winning LivWell program. LivWell focuses on the lifelong health of the whole person. The activities in place for Active Aging Week highlight the seven dimensions of health that make up our LivWell program. Some activities available throughout the week will target the following health categories:

Move and shake your way to health! Engage your heart and step up your cardio through different classes and activities offered throughout the week. Staying physically active is a great way to take part in Active Aging Week.

Never stop learning. By engaging in stimulating discussions with those whose opinions may differ from yours, or learning a new set of skills, you’ll keep your brain active and improve cognitive health. Throughout the week we’ll have many activities designed to challenge your mind.

When planning activities, be sure to invite friends along. Spending time with others throughout the week will boost your mood and your emotional health. You’ll have the added benefit of improving someone else’s emotional health, too.

You may be retired, but you can still put the skills you’ve learned during your career to use. Share your knowledge with others through presentations or conversations with others. What you’ve learned throughout the years can be beneficial to those around you.

Broaden your group of friends by participating in Active Aging Week activities. Remaining social as we age is important for cognitive function, health and longevity. Spend the week with those who make you smile.

Our environment has a huge impact on our health. Spend time learning about the various ways in which we can make a positive impact our planet through activities like gardening and recycling.

No matter what your beliefs, your spiritual health is important to us. Throughout the week we encourage you to spend time meditating and connecting to your spiritual self.  Our stained glass studio or walking trails are great places to go and reflect.

Year-Round Wellness at Meadow Lakes

At Meadow Lakes, we don’t just celebrate vibrant living during Active Aging Week. Life-enriching activities take place throughout the entire year, like back in August when we celebrated “Wellness Around the World.” Our residents virtually “traveled” around the world, learning and experiencing the cultures of countries where people live the happiest, longest lives.

From a friendly game of baseball, super popular in Japan, and enjoying delicious traditional food, drink, dance and entertainment in Greece to an end of summer Costa Rican pool party, Meadow Lakes residents had a great time participating while learning about these cultures.

Age Gracefully at Meadow Lakes

Engaging in a robust social calendar and an active lifestyle has been proven to help us live longer, healthier and happier lives. At Meadow Lakes, you’ll find an array of activities and active neighbors to enjoy them with throughout the year. Spend time walking the grounds, enjoy a round of golf with friends, take a class, or simply spend time doing whatever you love at Meadow Lakes.
