7 Fall Activities for Seniors in East Windsor, NJ

A senior couple playfully holds hands in the woods.

The air is crisp, the sun is shining, and the fields are bountiful, which means it’s time to enjoy all of the fall activities for seniors in and around East Windsor, NJ.

That includes traditional favorites like pumpkin patches and hayrides, but also afternoons sipping pumpkin ale in a beer garden or strolling through an outdoor arts-and-crafts show. Keep reading for a full roundup of the best fall activities in East Windsor, NJ.

1. Pick Your Own Sunflowers

While Holland Ridge Farms in Cream Ridge, NJ may be known for its tulips, their sunflowers aren’t far behind. The U-Pick season starts in mid-September and runs for about a month from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. (last entry at 4:30 p.m.) daily. Tickets give you access to fields full of flowers, a play area for kids, up to 20 food trucks, and a farmers market on weekends. Bonus: You also have the option to book a private tour on an all-terrain vehicle.

2. Stroll and Shop at an Arts-and-Crafts Show

Despite the name, it’s not really about the berries at the annual Cranberry Festival in Bordentown, NJ. Held each year in early October, it’s the largest juried art show in the region and boasts over 100 artisans, makers, and crafters. You’ll also find live music, food from award-winning restaurants, and a beer garden. So why’s it called the Cranberry Festival? Bordentown was once home to the bottling plant for Ocean Spray and is still home to cranberry growers. Take a bite of history by trying one of the festival’s cranberry-infused treats.

3. Flock to the Fall Migration

Birdwatching is one of the most popular fall activities for seniors, and one of the best places to do it is at Princeton’s Institute for Advanced Study Woods, especially during the fall migration. The 587 acres of wetlands and woods contain around 45 species of trees and are open to the public year-round. Check out this guide to the woods, which includes a trail map.

4. Sip Pumpkin Beer in the Sun

River Horse Brewing Co. in Ewing, NJ offers the perfect recipe for enjoying a sunny fall afternoon. Grab a spot in the outdoor beer garden and order the Hipp-O-Lantern Pumpkin ale, which combines pumpkin puree, cinnamon sticks, clove, nutmeg, fresh ginger root, vanilla beans, and blackstrap molasses. The brewery’s Oktoberfest is held each year toward the end of September and adds live music, traditional German food, and all kinds of crazy games to the mix.

5. Indulge in Baked Goods — or a Good Scare

We love a good farmstand. But a farmstand that sells baked goods is even better! At Kyle Family Farm in East Windsor, NJ, the lineup includes apple cider donuts; fresh baked breads, cookies, and danishes; and 17 different kinds of pie. If you’re looking for something a little scarier than the usual senior activities in East Windsor NJ, head to the farm at night for the Field of Terror, which is billed as New Jersey’s premier haunted attraction farm.

6. Get Lost in a Giant Hay Maze

Skip your morning walk and head to Howell Living History Farm Corn Maze in Hopewell Township, where you’ll get plenty of steps in. This 4-acre maze contains 2 miles of paths. When you’re done, check out the courtyard for more fun fall activities for seniors and little ones, including a pumpkin patch, a hay bale maze for kids, and a food tent, perfect for your grandkids. Parking and admission are free, but there’s a fee to participate in the corn maze.

7. Stock up on Farm-Fresh Fall Foods

If there’s one thing you don’t want to be this time of year, it’s a turkey. Still, Lee Turkey Farm in East Windsor is a good time for the rest of us and one of the best fall activities in East Windsor NJ. The farm has been buying — and selling — quality, oven-ready turkeys for 80 years. Pick your produce or head to the farm stand to buy whatever’s in season. The farm’s annual Fall Harvest Days are held in early October and feature hay rides, a corn maze, and special pricing on fruits and veggies.
